A 10th Anniversary Hug Blocks Quilt

2019 is our 10th Anniversary year of Quilts of Valour – Canada Society. We are excited to share our latest set of Hug Blocks and a quilt specifically designed to include them. The feature line of Northcott Stonehenge OH CANADA fabrics was originally designed in 2009 for our society by Canadian designers at Northcott

Quilt block patterns in this book are from common, traditional quilt blocks shared and available under many different media. These blocks are 9.5” X 9.5” unfinished, yielding 9” finished blocks. The quilt finishes at 68” X 68”. The book includes background of our Hug Blocks, letters from QOV quilt recipients, sewing tips and quilt finishing tips.

Please note corrections to booklet have been found:

Hug Blocks

The Hug Blocks program got its start in 2012 when Northcott designers Linda Ludovico and Deborah Edwards created the Northcott Stonehenge fabric collection OH CANADA in support of Quilts of Valour – Canada Society (QOVC). Several fabrics are in this Stonehenge line and Quilts of Valour – Canada™ invites quilters across the country to make a quilt block (or two, or more) from this line. Northcott sponsors Quilts of Valour – Canada through the sales of this line.

The Hug Blocks project encourages the making of blocks out of the specific Stonehenge line of OH CANADA fabrics. Blocks from across the country are made and sent to one location as specified on the block pattern. Quilters are also encouraged to make their own blocks too – given the following criteria:

Assembling Hug Blocks

Your blocks will be gathered and grouped for a quilt top, representing as many places across Canada as we can. They are sent to quilters, quilting bees, guilds and anyone interested in completing a quilt. Please register to complete a quilt. You will be expected to complete the quilt, bind and label, just as you would any other Quilt of Valour. We encourage using the blocks from several regions of Canada, not just those from your guild for this project. We want to wrap our veterans and military with many quilted hugs from across the nation!

Hug Block Patterns

Quilts of Valour’s Lezley Zwaal prepares new Hug Blocks patterns each year using OH CANADA fabrics. Each year’s blocks are used as fundraisers – each pattern being available with enough fabric to make one block. They are available from representatives across the country, at quilt shows or quilting bees. The patterns become available for free download when the next year’s patterns are created. Check out the other tabs across the page!

There is no deadline – we will keep making the quilts as long as blocks keep coming in! For more information, please email: hugblocks@quiltsofvalour.ca. Let us know if you would like a set of blocks to complete a Quilt of Valour.
